How to Build your Raft
Basic Construction

Steering

  • A rudder or tiller can be attached to the back timber to steer the raft but there is a disadvantage in that someone will be needed to steer and it can also break.
  • Alternatively, the back two paddlers can use their paddles to steer – a far simpler method but something that needs some practice.

Nose Cones

  • Anything to soften the passage through the water will help the raft go faster.

Size

  • Longer rafts go faster but are harder to steer and transport
  • Wider hull spacing makes for greater stability but makes for more difficult steering and transportation.

Weight

  • Lighter rafts go faster but become more unstable, and especially if the crew outweigh the craft.
  • The lower the centre of gravity, the more stable the raft, but the less amount of barrel in the water, the faster it will go due to less drag.

Miscellaneous

  • Seating of some sort will provide comfort but does add weight and will need to be fixed firmly.
  • A surface for a painted number on both sides is required.
  • Always make sure you are wearing a lifejacket in your own interests!
  • A cubic foot of water weighs about 62 pounds. That means that a 180-pound person will float in a boat that is 1 foot by 1 foot by 3 feet. Sounds uncomfortable, but at least you would know how much raft you and your crew will need at a bare minimum to displace enough water to stay afloat, without taking into account things like splashing or wobbling. Last minute modifications and frantic problem solving, however, are often required. Creative problem solving adds to the fun. Whether you get your insights from methodical effort or from wide-ranging trial-and-error, building a raft can be very rewarding.

CAUTION…
Be sure your raft will be able to get out the door of wherever you build it. There are woeful tales about creations that had to be dismantled — or even trashed and rebuilt — just because no one thought about the size of the raft and the size of the doorway.

Additional Note
No sails or motors. Only human powered propulsion is allowed to pilot your raft down the Trent , this means paddles or poles. Alternatively you can get off and push (this usually happens when you discover that your design is not as good as you thought).
